The Workplace Survival Guide: How to Look Busy While Doing Nothing

We’ve all had those days where you just can’t. Maybe it’s because you’re tired, maybe you’re burnt out, or maybe it’s just one of those meh days where productivity goes out the window. But don’t worry! There are ways to look busy while doing absolutely nothing. Here’s your survival guide:

1. Walk Around with an Empty Coffee Cup

The best part about coffee is that it’s the universal symbol of productivity. Walk around with an empty coffee cup, and people will think you’re important. Bonus points if you bump into your boss and sigh dramatically like you’re working hard on something “important.”

2. Type Aggressively

Nothing screams “I’m working” more than frantic typing. Even if you’re just making random keystrokes, nobody will question it. Throw in some occasional sighs and frustrated “ugh” sounds for extra effect.

3. Keep Multiple Tabs Open

The more tabs, the more productive you look. Spreadsheets, emails, charts, and the occasional social media tab to keep you sane—all open at once. The moment your boss walks by, you quickly click to your spreadsheet and look way too busy.

4. Wear Headphones Without Music

This is the ultimate power move. You won’t have to listen to anyone’s annoying chatter, and you look busy. Even better, if anyone asks, just nod and say you’re “deep in focus.” It’s a win-win.

5. Schedule Fake Meetings

Nothing says “I’m super important” like a packed calendar. Schedule a few fake meetings, make sure they overlap, and you’ve just made it look like your whole day is booked. When someone asks, just say, “Sorry, I have a call!” It’s magical.
